Butter Pound Cake

28 Jul

As I said in my last post, I am back to basic. I just happened to find Christine’s butter pound cake recipe, so here you go – my replication of the butter pound cake.

I have a fond memory of store-bought pound cake when I was a kid. It was a luxury treat. Its texture was smooth and its smell was sweet and buttery. I just wanted more and more! A few years back when I baked my first pound cake my baking skill was bad. Of course it turned out terrible. Since then I haven’t tried it again. Today I am pound of my butter pound cake, it has brought my memory back! It has just the right amount of sugar – sweet but not too sweet. Thanks for Christine’s recipe! Within five minutes, half of the cake had gone in our stomachs 🙂

Baking 101 – Angel Food Cake

21 Jul

I am always ambitious in terms of baking. I have tried some technical recipes (e.g. macaroon) yet I haven’t mastered the basic. I have been inspired by the ‘Bake with Anna Olson’ TV show, so this weekend I decided to bake the simplest cake – Angel Food Cake. If you are interested please check out her recipe here.

Art of Cake Awards 2013

7 Jul

Today is the final day of the Art of Cake Awards 2013 in Auckland. Five cakers showcased their arts in the shopping mall and the public can vote for their favorites.  Also four free cake craft sessions were held in the last two weeks. Each sugar craft artist demonstrated one technique, i.e. making flowers, figurine modelling, chocolate modelling etc. I have been to all of them and I had fun and more importantly I have learned new things! Honestly all cakes (technically the chocolate art from Chocolate Earth is not a cake) looked amazing and each one had its own uniqueness, but I liked the cake from Sweet Bites Cakes most. It was inspired by this Christine Dior dress I am impressed by the design and hand painting flowers. Here are the photos, what do you think?

P.S. I don’t know the result yet, I’lll find out tomorrow 🙂

***11/07/2013 update: Sweet Bites Cake won the 1st place, congratulations!***
